The vibrant surface texture and the loosely organized colour areas in Mary Heilmann's "Inside and Outside" create a rhythmically bound radiance. Simultaneously the obvious cheerfulness of the work illustrates the American artist's playful approach to geometric abstraction. As one of the most influential abstract painters of her generation, Heilmann breaks complex structures in her works with subtle formal deviations, such as frayed lines, irregular brushwork, or varying color intensities.
