The German sculptor Stephan Balkenhol (*1957 Fritzlar) is known for his wooden sculptures, roughly carved from a block and painted in colour. Since the 1980s his oeuvre has revolved around figurative representation and the existential questions of contemporary man. The expressive surface design of the artwork "Grosses Kopfrelief (Mann)" refers to the sculptural working process and, together with the absent expression of the figure, is characteristic of Balkenhol's wooden works.
The artist teaches as professor of sculpture at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe since 1992. He lives and works in Karlsruhe and Meisenthal (France).
