Jaune Quick-to-See Smith belongs to a generation of Native Americans who, in their artistic practice, renegotiate the relationship of indigenous culture to today's USA and its problematic past.
In her works, Smith deconstructs the Euro-American interpretation of indigenous history, addresses issues questions of personal and collective identity, and engages with contemporary life in the United States. In doing so, she often works with symbols and pictograms, iconic images of American mainstream culture and quotations from Western art history. In paintings, drawings, collages and installations she brings these elements into new contexts, thus creating works that can often be read as ironic-political commentary. The Whitney Museum of American Art in New York is currently showing a major retrospective of the artist.
