Heidi Bucher's late work from the mid-1980s onwards was created on the Canary Island of Lanzarote. Initially used as a holiday resort, the artist is increasingly drawn to the sea in her older age and she finds an inspiring place of retreat in the municipality of Teguise on Lanzarote. She acquires the not yet renovated townhouse, the Palacio Ico, and deals artistically with the architecture of the property. In a similar working process as with the textiles in her early work, Heidi Bucher focuses in her late creative phase on latex cladding of doors and entrance portals. When the material is removed, surface residues such as wood splinters or paint always stick to it, discoloring the latex and imbuing it with memory; it acquires a patina and ages. The subject of the doors can also be read as a metaphor for a transition in the life of the artist.
The work "Cuartel puerta principal exterior", created in 1985, shows the latex skinning of the main door of the Palacio Ico, where Heidi Bucher lived until her death in 1993.
