"I decided to view women and men by representing women, not just to reverse conventional history, but to see what it means to view the world through the depiction of women".¹
Nancy Spero's large-format works from the series "A Cycle in Time" and "Sacred and Profane II" were exhibited in 1996 at the New York Kunsthalle as image sequences measuring 40 and 50 meters. The monumental, fresco-like narratives in the exhibition curated by Martin Kunz showcase women as protagonists. Through Spero's combination of subject matter and format, associations can be made with hieroglyphic painting. In both works, Nancy Spero applied her distinct method: a specifically feminine visual language that evolves from mythical and symbolic representations or references to baroque painting.
