Annotation:

With her colourful and expansive installations, the German artist Katharina Grosse is one of the most important painterly positions in international contemporary art. The oeuvre of the first winner of the Oskar Schlemmer Prize is known to a worldwide audience through numerous presentations at biennials, group exhibitions and also solo exhibitions in renowned institutions such as the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, the Denver Art Museum, the Albertina in Vienna and the Kunstmuseum Bonn.

In her works on canvas from the 1990s, the artist juxtaposes colours of different densities and temperatures and repeats vertical, transparent brushstrokes. The work "O.T." 1993 invites the viewer into different dimensions of thought and painting with its overlapping brushstrokes, varying application of colour and play of transparencies. In this way, Grosse explores the painting process, the potential of colour and thus the possibilities of the medium. In the decades that followed, she constantly expanded the space for painting with multidimensional, dynamic works that always include temporal aspects and scrutinise architectural contexts.

Katharina Grosse studied painting at the art academies in Münster and Düsseldorf. From 2000-2010 she held a professorship at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weissensee and from 2010 to 2018 at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf. She lives and works in Berlin and New Zealand.
