"Mein Interesse gilt einer Malerei, in der einfache, elementare Formen den Farben ermöglichen zu atmen, zu strahlen, zu ruhen [...] Das Glück, welches mir Farben bereiten, lässt sich durch kein anderes ersetzen."¹

Colour and light play a decisive role in the oeuvre of the 1931 born artist Heinz Mack. From 1991, he created his "Chromatic Constellations", in which he experimented with the element of light, its refraction and perception. By stringing together spectral colours, he creates a rhythm that shows the individual colours in a flowing transition. Geometric shapes such as triangles, diamonds and rectangles support this dynamic effect. Mack himself explains the group of works, which also includes the work offered here "Untitled (Chromatic Constellation)", 2006/2007, as follows: "Meine Chromatischen Konstellationen zeigen die Farben als Licht und das Licht als Farbe; sie haben keine Schatten! Warum zwei Farben sich lieben und zwei andere nicht, bleibt ein Rätsel. Kommt dann eine dritte hinzu, können zwei unverträgliche Farben auf einmal Freunde werden. Erscheinen noch weitere Farben auf der Bildfläche, von unterschiedlicher Intensität und Dichte [...] so entsteht eine Art Familie; deren verwandtschaftliche Beziehungen nenne ich eine Eigenschaft der "Chromatischen Konstellation"."²

Heinz Mack studied at the Düsseldorf State Academy of Art and at the University of Cologne. Together with Otto Piene, he founded the ZERO group in Düsseldorf in 1957 with the aim of making a new artistic start in the post-war period. AMong other places, Mack exhibited at the documenta in Kassel, and in 1970 he was part of the German pavilion at the Venice Biennale alongside three other artists. In 2011, he was honoured with the Grand Cross of Merit with Star of the Federal Republic of Germany for his life's work.
